Sokrates Tavernas (Horwich Bolton and Sale Cheshire) are dedicated to providing a high standard of cuisine from Greece, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. The atmosphere of the tavernas is light, easy going and people can relax and enjoy the wonderful flavours of Mediterranean cooking. The best fresh ingredients are used to cook our meals which are prepared in the authentic and traditional manner of the regions they originate from.

The focal point of the menus is the ‘Meze – Greek Banquet’ which is always the most popular choice. This is a selection of little ‘bites’ and dishes from the menu (more than twenty) so in way you get to try a bit of everything by picking for a couple of hours with some good wine. It’s a wonderful and very sociable way of eating. The Meze can also be tailored for vegetarians.

Alternatively, there is a wide selection of Appetizers and Main Courses in our A’ la Carte menu. Dishes like the popular Mousaka, Dolmathes (stuffed vine leaves), Kleftiko (lamb in the oven), Stifado (beef casserole) and King Prawns Saganaki (with ouzo, tomato and feta cheese) to mention but a few. In addition, there are some
wonderful and succulent kebabs cooked on real charcoal.
Check the individual menus of the two restaurants (Horwich and Sale) as there are some differences between them.
There is an extensive wine list with a fantastic selection of red, white and rose wines from Greece and Cyprus which contains some real gems. There are some great wines that are produced in the regions and wine lovers will be pleasantly rewarded.
To finish off we some wonderful home made desserts like Baklava (filo pastry with walnuts and almonds), our extremely popular Greek Yogurt Cheesecake, a selection of Fruit compotes such as Baby Figs in Red Wine, Chilled Greek Rice Pudding and lots more.
We hope that we can provide our customers with a little bit of the southern Mediterranean essence right here in the north of England.
Christmas Booking Information
The normal menus apply in both restaurants throughout December so check out the relevant page for the Horwich or the Sale branch menu.
On New Year’s Eve we offer our special NY Eve Banquet only at both restaurants. Ring the appropriate branch (see contacts page) for details on menus and prices. Please note that vegetarians or people with special diets need to inform us for New Year’s Eve bookings.
At Sokrates in Horwich we have Xmas Party Nights with Greek Live Music and Dancing on the first three Thursdays in December i.e. 4th, 11th and 18th of December as well as on the Mondays 22nd and 29th. The normal menu applies to these days. In addition, we are able to provide the entertainment on any weekday for any large parties that wish alternative dates from the ones mentioned above.
We will require deposits in order to confirm bookings on the following days:
On the Live Music nights at Sokrates Horwich - £5.00 per person plus the meal choices prior to arrival.
Xmas Eve (24th December) - £5.00 per person
New Year’s Eve (31st December) - £10.00 per person
Also note that our Early Evening Menu Offer does not apply on the Live Music Nights, Xmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
